Over the last 4 years Jay has delivered many courses and training inputs to Scout and Guide volunteers across the UK and Europe.
Jay is a proud Scout and has close links with Guiding. He has volunteered across the UK and internationally, often taking on a mental health roles such as a Listening Ear Station Chief at the World Scout Jamboree in 2019.
Jay can provide courses for Scout and Guide organisations that help volunteers effectively support others.
As volunteers we are familiar with physical first aid and are prepared to respond if someone is injured. Should this be any different when it comes to supporting a young person or fellow volunteer who is distressed, anxious or in crisis?
Our organisations have a proud history of helping people in the event of injury or crisis. From knowing what to do if someone has a heart attack to forming a response to humanitarian disaster, Scouts and Guides are always there. Alongside our physical first aid skills we need to also be competent in supporting people in distress, panic or needing some emotional support at a difficult time.
This is where Mental Health First Aid comes in. MHFA isn’t about being a counsellor or Doctor; it’s about being able to respond in a helpful way, working out a short term plan and getting help from professionals if needed. It equips participants with helpful strategies and ideas for embedding mental health awareness in their Scout or Guide groups.
As a Scout with close links to Guiding Jay understands the challenges that volunteers face when working with young people. He has volunteered in a wide range of roles that mean courses can be tailored to meet the needs of the participants.
Jay is able to deliver a bespoke training input, presentation, key note or accredited training course at a time and place to suit your organisation.
Options might include:
· 2 Day MHFA Youth - 8-16 people – 9am - 5pm – Saturday – Sunday deliver often works best.
· ½ day MHFA Aware – up to 25 people. 2 delivers in a day is possible.
· Key note: topics such as ‘Scouting/Guiding & mental health’, ‘Developing Resilience in Young People’ and Mental Health Awareness in Scouting/Guiding. These sessions can be delivered in a time frame and method to suit your event.
Mental Health Building Blocks provides an additional discount for Scouts and Guides on open courses but also for courses hosted counties or districts.
